Ventura is an arts-rich town. Unlike some other communities, we don’t have to rely on “imported” art, because we grow artists here! The health of our arts community provides Ventura with a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere of culture and creativity. A few examples of what I see as exciting arts resources are:
Brooks Institute of Photography: Their film school here in Ventura has quickly become one of the most highly acclaimed in the nation.
Art City: Largest supplier of sculpture stone in the country, and home to numerous outstanding sculptors.
Ventura College: Well-known, high quality arts program, whose “master” instructors such as Ellis Jump, Norm Kirk and Gerd Koch have mentored a generation of fine artists.
Axtell Expressions: Local puppet designer and manufacturer, whose innovative, high-end puppets have received many awards and are used in professional productions worldwide.
Rubicon Theater Company: Quality theater right here in Ventura. With the hiring of a new general manager, and possible purchase of the Laurel Theater, their excellence will continue to grow.
Focus on the Masters: Offering arts education, this is a great resource for children and adults.
Ventura Chamber Music Festival: Their new director will provide leadership and inspiration for this annual cultural event which brings the finest talent to Ventura.
I don’t believe the city should control or completely finance artistic entities in our community. An important part of art is the freedom to create without “strings.” However, city government can support the arts and encourage their growth by:
Ë continuing to give grants,
Ë providing assistance in finding additional grants and funding,
Ë working to promote local artists through events such as the Art Walk,
Ë actively seeking to bring arts-related business to town,
Ë easing “red tape” for the formation of arts organizations. |
