Development in Ventura

We are raising the standards for development in Ventura, taking the long view and insisting on high-quality design. Projects must include excellence in architecture and materials, beautiful landscaping, well-designed sidewalks and streets and parks. We must build all types of housing for all types of people-from small apartments to single family homes with a variety of lot sizes to executive estates. All development must be sensitive to the character of existing neighborhoods; views and historic context must be respected.

Infill projects near city services will help to improve vacant and blighted areas, while preserving our valuable agricultural land.

Responsible growth is slow and steady. For the past four years, we have averaged 329 new housing units per year. Housing stock in the city of Ventura has grown from 39,000 units in 1996 to 41,265 in 2006, a reasonable, even pace. Our population growth continues to average a little lower than 1% a year, which is the rate called for in our General Plan.
